Not every pair of colleagues in a workplace would agree on the definition of a “successful career”. Most people will mention the following desiderata: professional growth, financial stability, personal fulfilment, autonomy, an opportunity to make a positive impact on society, social connections, recognition and respect in the community, as well as an enduring legacy.

Many seek a career that affords opportunities, or the ability, to achieve financial goals, to develop and build up skillsets (which further advances one’s career)—while enjoying a balanced work versus personal life. Such attractive prospects have led people to indulge in clientelism (i.e., offering support, loyalty, or favours to those in power or the political elites) in exchange for various benefits, including promotions and/or lucrative positions.
